Who is able to
resist these opening words? "On a pleasant night towards the close of May of the
year 1898, Sherlock Holmes and I had been sitting together in silence all
evening .... " Irresistible! The sentence continues: " ...he intent with a
powerful lens in hand upon the task of deciphering the remains of the original
inscription upon a palimpsest, I deep in a recent treatise upon surgery in the
pages of The Lancet." This is the first sentence of a new story titled "The
Adventure of the Two Coptic Patriarchs." The book's subtitle explains it all –
"An Untold Tale of Sherlock Holmes by John H. Watson, M.D." – or some of it!
What it doesn't explain is that here is a new adventure about Holmes and the Arc
of the Covenant! P. Whitney Hughes, the author/editor, has appended an
entertaining and knowledgeable foreword and afterword which are certain to
please Sherlockians, Watsonians, and all fans of detective fiction. Highly
readable!
